About This Course:

This is a special one-off class for Valentines day. A place booked on the
course is intended for two people to attend together to forge a single pair of interlocking hearts.

 

What Will We Learn On The Course?:

The core techniques used by blacksmiths to shape steel. You will be learn how to bend and shape steel using a gas forge, hammers and anvils. We will guide you through the steps needed to make a pair of interlocking hearts that incorporate many of the fundamental techniques used by blacksmiths.

What will I make on the course?
By the end of the class you will each have made a hand forged heart. 


Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for complete beginners who have never tried blacksmithing before. We won’t be doing anything too strenuous so there’s no need to worry that you’re not strong enough.

What is included?
All materials are included in the course fee. Personal protective equipment is also provided and must be worn at all times. We will provide tea and coffee throughout the day.

What should I wear?
It is essential that you wear old clothes made of natural fibres i.e. not made of a flammable material such as polyester.  You must wear sturdy shoes that cover your whole foot (if you are wearing sandals you will not be allowed to participate in the course).

What should I bring?

You might want to bring a note book. Most importantly you will need to bring a packed lunch. Please be aware that there are no cafes or shops within walking distance of the forge.

Age requirements

The minimum age for this class is 17 however we love working with young people and if you are the parent or guardian of someone younger than 17 who would like to join us for a class please contact us to discuss your needs. 

About the Tutor:

Lizzie Hughes is an artist who trained at The Slade School of Fine Art. She has exhibited internationally and in the UK in galleries including The Whitechapel Gallery and The William Morris Gallery. Earlier this year Bathurst Regional Council invited her to be Artist in Residence in Hill End, a former gold mining town in New South Wales, Australia.

We located at Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning, Manor Road, Essex,
RM4 1NB.  If you are arriving by car there is parking on site.

 

Cancellations:

We know that sometimes schedules change and when this happens we do our best to accomodate you. However as our student numbers are very small last minute changes are very difficult for us. If you're booking for a friend please check that they are available before you make a booking. We only refund cancellations up to 30 days before the start of a course.
