What can I expect from a private course?:
We work closely with students on 1-2-1 classes to ensure that they get the most out of their day with us. Some of our students want to spend the time learning new techniques and the correct use of tools, whilst others prefer to concentrate on producing a finished object to take home. We always take the time to find out what you want to achieve while spending the day with us.
What will I make on the course?
We have a series of projects we can work through that will introduce you to core blacksmithing techniques. However, if you have an idea for something you want to make do let us know. If we think it’s practical and can be achieved within in the time we’ll do our best to make it happen.
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for complete beginners who have never tried blacksmithing before or for people who would like to brush up on their skills.
What is included?
All materials are included in the course fee. Personal protective equipment is also provided and must be worn at all times. We will provide tea and coffee throughout the day.
What should I wear?
It is essential that you wear old clothes made of natural fibres i.e. not made of a flammable material such as polyester. You must wear sturdy shoes that cover your whole foot (if you are wearing sandals you will not be allowed to participate in the course).
What should I bring?
You might want to bring a note book and drawings or photographs of something you might like to try to make (please be realistic!). Most importantly you will need to bring a packed lunch. Please be aware that there are no cafes or shops within walking distance of the forge.
The minimum age to attend one of our group classes is 17 however for 1-2-1 classes we are happy to work with people aged 12 or older.
If you are aged 12-16 we will need authorisation from a parent or guardian before we can book you on the course
Can I make a knife or blade on the course?
No, this is not a bladesmithing course and we will not be covering special techniques such as tempering and grinding needed to make a blade. However, if you are interested in bladesmithing an introductory course to blacksmithing is a good place to start.
